Unbeaten Piper Has Huge District Test Against Monarch Tonight

When the 2024 season began, there were a few teams you could have picked to be unbeaten going into Week 10. Most likely, the Piper Bengals was not one of those programs.

What Quentin Short and his staff have done in the two seasons since coming over from Parkland Douglas is impressive – to say the least.

When his No. 10 and 7-0 team squares off with No. 16 Coconut Creek Monarch (4-3) tonight (7:00) at Coconut Creek High School, a District 13-6A title will be at stake, and even more important, the continuation of an unbeaten season.

While the detractors will scream that this program hasn’t played the schedule that Monarch and some other teams in south Florida have played, the very fact that everyone they’ve lined up against on their schedule, this team has beaten.

While Piper has enjoyed success in the first nine weeks of the season, the Knights have had a much different road with Georgia’s Peachtree Ridge in the Broward County National Football Showcase, Sanford Seminole (near Orlando), and area powers Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas as major obstacles.

Those losses and a challenging schedule have grown this program up fast under head coach Calvin Davis. The reality that the Knights have been tested certainly gives them a huge advantage, but this is football and yes – anything can happen.

The objective for this program, heading into the season, was to take things one step further than 2023 when the lost to Jacksonville Mandarin in the state semifinals.

This is one of the best games in the area. One that the Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) should be proud of having this Thursday.
