Week 6 Gets Started This Evening

It’s hard to believe that this season is moving so fast, but it’s like that every year.

You wait nearly nine months for a season that moves along quickly and is finished before you know it.

When two games are played tonight in Miami-Dade County, it will begin the sixth week of the season – the halfway point in the 2023 season.

The final weeks of the season will truly be exciting with district and regional standing at stake – and that will certainly bring out the best in all players and teams.

Westminster Academy QB Anthony Barbar Leads The Way

When it comes to the quarterback position, south Florida signal callers are often not among the best in the state, but that is changing.

Heading into the sixth week of the season, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, with some of the toughest and most competitive schedules in the country – find themselves on top.

Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy senior Anthony Barbar, a three-year starter for the Lions, finds himself as the statistical leader for a team that is 5-0.

The Lions and Barbar have been lighting it up against their opponents and Barbar (100 of 139, 1,596, 17 touchdowns, 1 interception) sits at No. 1 among Florida’s quarterbacks.

Barbar and his teammates have rolled through the first five opponents this season, has a chance to maintain his lofty standing with head coach Ehren Walhoff and his teammates leading the way.

Barbar is not the only south Floridian off to a big-time start. Miami Norland junior Ennio Yapoor Jr. is also a big reason why the Vikings are off to a perfect 5-0 start.

Yapoor and his teammates still have a few challenging teams (Miami Booker T. Washington and Miami Central) coming up over the next three weeks, so his arm and legs will be needed in a major way.

In five games, Yapoor has thrown for 1,303 yards and 12 touchdowns on 63 of 81 attempts. He has also added to that impressive start with his legs, rushing for over 200 yards as well for head coach Daryle Heidelburg’s team.

Speaking of underclassmen, how about Miami True North Classical Academy’s Zac Katz. For the second straight year, this impressive prospect has been among the best in the country. This year as just a ninth grader.

Like Barbar and Yapoor, Katz has led his Titans and head coach Greg Laferre to a perfect start, including a win over defending 1S state champion Naples First Baptist – last week.

Katz has complete 73 of 90 passes for 1,266 yards and 21 touchdowns.

If you are looking for a huge reason why Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna is off to a 5-0 start and ranked No. 3 in the country, maybe looking at senior Cedrick Bailey would be a great start.

All the North Carolina State commitment has done for head coach Dameon Jones and the Lions is throw for 1,193 yards and 15 touchdowns on 100 completions.

This team has played one the of the most challenging schedules in the nation.

Miami Westminster Christian junior Jason Barket Jr. is picking up where he left off in 2022.

All this talented young man has done for first year head coach Patrick Wennin is complete 76 of 143 passes for 1,140 and seven touchdowns.

Although he was injured after three games, Coconut Creek Monarch senior quarterback A.J. Hairston showed why he is one of the best in Florida for head coach Calvin Davis.

The UMass commitment was 54 of 77 for 1,103 yards and 14 touchdowns before going down against Piper.

Fort Lauderdale NSU University School senior Jett Yurgealitis is also one of the top passers in Florida after the first five weeks.

The talented young man has also led the Sharks and head coach Mike Norman, completing 53 of 86 passes for 1,033 and 16 touchdowns while throwing only one interception.

Throughout the season we will shine the spotlight on Miami-Dade and Broward standouts that are making an impact for their teams.

South Florida Exciting Week 5 Rewind

It is often said that if you want to see off-season camps, 7-on-7 tournament and combines, simply travel across the country, and attend just about any summer event.

If it’s high-level football games that you happen to be searching for, you need to look no further than south Florida. From late August until the state championships, there is no other area in the country that features more games who are nationally recognized like the two counties (Miami-Dade and Broward) that make up south Florida.

One of the heaviest recruited 60 miles of real estate from north Fort Lauderdale to where Florida City becomes the gateway to the Florida kids, the talent is amazing – every single week.

This past Thursday night the entire country, via ESPN2, had the chance to see south Florida football at its very finest.

Nowhere in the country – California, Texas and Georgia included – would you find the kind of elite, Power 5 talent that you had at the “Mecca”, Traz Powell Stadium, when two of the country’s best squared off.

Even though the rain and lightning delayed the matchup by two hours, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, No. 2 in Florida, and No. 3 Miami Central, battled for 48 minutes, and when the final seconds ticked off near midnight, the Lions remained unbeaten, 31-28.

No matter how you slice it, there were absolutely NO losers on this night. Chaminade-Madonna will look to get back to the 1M state title game for the record eighth straight time – while the four-time defending state champions Rockets will look to win that coveted fifth straight crown.

What the nation had the opportunity to see was two programs, stacked with elite talent, showcase future collegiate and professional prospects. That is certainly nothing new to this area.

Coach Dameon Jones and Coach Jube Joseph gave the nation an opportunity to watch the #305 and #954 on full display.

Coconut Creek 26, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely 7. For the past three seasons, the Cougars have been setting the table for 2023.

This was to be the year that those youngsters, who started this journey together, made it all pay off – and they have.

Winning for the fourth time this season, beating the rival Tigers was something that was marked on the calendar from the beginning.

What head coach Johnnie Sloan and his team have been able to accomplish is something that this team expected.

With the top rated Chaminade-Madonna Lions coming up this coming week, the thought of an upset will be on the minds of every player and coach – and it will indeed be the biggest game this school has ever played!

Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 42, Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast 6. Just when everyone was starting to write the four-time defending state champion Raiders off as a national contender, they came out and demolished a team that hadn’t lost this season.

After losing to national California power St. John Bosco to open the season, and narrowly escaping Cocoa at home, many football fans and purists were not totally sold on head coach Roger Harriott and his football team, but like they have done for much of the past three decades, they rose to the occasion and are very much in control for an amazing fifth consecutive state title.

In addition to those three games, there were some other impressive games in week 5:

Huge Football Friday In South Florida

No matter what week of the football season it is, you can guarantee that there will be a huge matchup in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Spotlight games that not only affect the area, state and region, but games that peg the meter at the national level.

With district games starting to take place, there are some contests that will grab the attention of the fans, players and administration.

While there is a full slate of games scheduled for this Friday night, we have picked our three to keep an eye on:

No. 11 Coconut Creek at No. 10 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely, 7. This is a game that everyone has been pointing to since the schedules were made.

Coach Mike Bailey’s team, winners of 13 straight regular season games, playing host to a heated rival in easily one of the showcase games of the week.

Coach Johnnie Sloan and his Cougars have had a much tougher schedule, coming off a complete domination of Plantation. They have a belief that this is their year.

Two teams that are among the best in south Florida squaring off in a game that will certainly tell a lot.

No. 18 Miami Dr. Krop at No. 17 Hollywood South Broward, 7. While it’s only the fifth week of the season, here is a game that the winner will have a major advantage in the race for a district title and high playoff seed.

Coach Tom Caporale and his Lightning have answered almost every bell and are ready for his football team to start getting the attention they deserve. They are talented and loaded with quality playmakers.

Charles McCrae and the Bulldogs are looking to get back into the playoffs this season with a team that has plenty of talent and playmakers all over the field.

The Lighting won the district last year and will be ready to defend the title on the road, but the obstacle is real and undefeated.

Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast at No. 4 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, 7. Another home game for the Raiders against a team that many have very little clue about – much like Cocoa.

The Titans and head coach Irvin Jones come to town loaded with talent and size, losing last season in Port St. Lucie to the Raiders, 21-7. They come into tonight’s game unbeaten.

Roger Harriott’s team has rebounded from an opening day loss to California power St. John Bosco. They are loaded with talent, but still looking for some new faces to step up.

St. Thomas Aquinas cannot afford to take this team lightly and they know that after playing them last year. Remember, Treasure Coast has played a really tough schedule so far an will be ready to play.

This is one of the state’s key matchups this season and many will be watching.
