Since the day that he arrived on Miami Northwestern’s campus Taron “Tyger” Dickens stole the spotlight.

After a brilliant youth football career, he made his way to Overtown just in time to guide the Bulls to a state championship win against Orlando Jones. His 25 touchdowns and over 1,000 yard season set the table for a brilliant future.

The 13-2 record was capped off with eight straight wins and a 34-17 state title victory.

The 2020-21 season was indeed a tough year – with this team losing to Plantation American Heritage, 12-3 in the second round of the state playoffs and a 5-4 year. But Dickens still managed to do his thing, putting up big numbers despite his team falling short.

Last season was another year where the trip to the state finals fell short, losing to eventual 6A state champion Tampa Jesuit and finishing 10-4.

Dickens would end his junior season with an amazing 42 touchdowns and well over 2,500 yards, which set the table for his senior year.

With the Miami-Dade County passing record up for grabs – with Miami Booker T. Washington’s Torrey Morrison sitting at 10,076, Dickens was up for the challenge.

Last Saturday night in a game against Miami Immaculata LaSalle, Tyger threw for 281 yards in a 44-0 win and put himself into first place as the all-time leading passer in a county and an area that has produced more than its share of stars.

While Week 10 may not produce some of the elite matchups that we have had much of the 2022 high school football season, you can guarantee that several contests will carry a lot of weight for district titles and playoff placement.

As teams are still in the survival mode, you never know which program will show up this week, and that makes things very interesting.

Every week during the season, we pick out five games to keep an eye on. Here is this week’s schools to watch:

No. 9 Fort Lauderdale Dillard (5-3) at Tallahassee Lincoln (5-3), 7. After a rough start, the Panthers are getting things back together – and a road trip to the state capitol is going to be a challenge. With an eye on making a splash in the playoffs, this will be a game that this team should win, but with next Saturday’s huge showdown with unbeaten Pompano Beach Blanche Ely on the horizon, you never know where their heads will be at.

Miami Carol City (5-3) at Ocala Vanguard (5-3), 7:30. Look who is back among the winning teams. The Chiefs have made a huge push to make the playoffs, and a trip to play a very solid program will further test how far this football team has come. This is going to be a challenge as Carol City’s many younger players are starting to make a major contribution.

Miami Edison (4-4) at No. 20 Miami Jackson, Curtis, 7:30. This is one of those rivalries that goes back decades, and while playoff spots are still up for grabs, this will certainly be a game that will test how far each program has come. The Red Raiders and Generals have been tested this season, and with an appearance in the Top 20 for the first time this season, Jackson wants to keep the momentum.

Hollywood McArthur (4-4) at Miami Dr. Krop (4-4) at Ives Park, 7:30. Things do not get any bigger this week. A McArthur win and the district goes to the Mustangs, but if the Lightning come away with a victory and Hollywood South Broward could come away with the title – based on points since all three would be tied under the state’s new format.

No. 7 Miramar (6-1) at Miramar Everglades (4-4), 7. This is a rivalry that has gone on since Everglades opened up. Although one sided, the Gators have played very well this season, but to beat the Patriots they are going to need a maximum effort – since Miramar has been one of the best teams in south Florida over the past month.

When things kickoff today, it will mark the final two weeks of the 2022 regular season.

As we know this year has moved along quickly, these next two weeks will help some programs realize dreams while others will see this season end in disappointment.

With district titles and playoff seeding still up in the air for some, these next two weeks will mean just about everything to those searching for a positive end to the season.

With just two ranked teams playing on Thursday, much of the attention will be focused on Friday and even Saturday.

Tonight, No. 12 Miami Norland (5-2) will visit North Miami Beach (3-5) in a 7:00 game at Traz Powell Stadium – with the winner making a push for the playoffs.

In Broward County, No. 14 Coconut Creek Monarch (6-2) looks to bounce back from a loss to No. 3 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas when the Knights take on Coral Springs (3-5) at 7:00.

If you were to promote and publicize every top prospect who plays football in south Florida, you could never fit them all in.

There is so much talent in this region of the country, so many athletes are routinely overlooked, and that is not a good thing. With perhaps more recruiting analysts than any other place in the country, you would think that it would hard to miss quality talent, but it happens every year.

While we bring you hundreds of talented football players every year, we sometimes miss out on some prospects that slip under the radar. But with that said, we have had the opportunity to attend more games, practices, camps, combines and 7-on-7 events than most.

With the many football players we get out, the one day that we shine a spotlight on prospects is Wednesday. That is a day when we get five Miami-Dade and Broward standouts. Some who have been on the radar – while others are being recognized for the first time.

Today, we look at some 2024 juniors:

Chris Wheatley Humphrey, RB/DB, Hollywood South Broward. Following in the footsteps of his father who was a standout for the Bulldogs, this is someone who is certainly performing at a different level. As a running back, his speed, vision and ability to make huge plays has already been recognized by college coaches all over the nation. Defensively, he is physical and gifted enough to lineup at cornerback or safety. There is no doubt that he is a Power 5 talent who will continue to pick up major offers over the next year.

Malachi Keels, RB/S, 6-0, 180, Miami Westminster Christian. Because there are so many teams in south Florida that get plenty of the spotlight, it’s schools like this, who play a bulk of their games during the late afternoon, that almost beg for more coverage. Here is a two-way standout that is easily one of the best in the state – and as the Warriors continue to race toward a post season spot – this is a talent who will get plenty of attention. Has done it all for a program that jumped out to a 7-1 start.

Alberto Mendoza, QB, 6-2, 190, Miami Christopher Columbus. If anyone had reservations about this young man, the questions were all answered in the GMAC final game against top-rated Miami Central. After starting his career at Miami Belen Jesuit, he made his way over to play for the Explorers last season, won the job in the spring and has not looked back. He is developing into one of the top prospects in his class – with a strong arm and ability to make solid decisions. The best thing about this quality talent is he has a full year to continue to showcase his many abilities on the field – as well in the classroom where he has an impressive 4.85 GPA.

Dorian Perez, DE/TE, 6-2, 225, Miami Braddock. Here is the perfect example of a talented prospect that many have not watched or promoted. Watch him perform and you see someone who dominates from his defensive end position with a great first step and instincts that are only getting better and better. By this time next year, here is a talented student/athlete who has the chance to be one of the best in south Florida – if not the state of Florida. In a recent game against Miami Dr. Krop, he made five plays in a row – eight out of 10 and thrust himself into the spotlight. In addition, when given the opportunity to play on the offensive side of the ball, he is more than a functional tight end. Keep your eye on this impressive talent who is ready to work hard in the off-season.

2024 – Jonathan Rodriguez, OC, 6-5, 280, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. Since coming over from Coral Springs Charter last season, this is one of the most versatile line prospects, who has made the move to center. Because her is versatile and a hard worker, you will see his recruitment soar over the next few months. He is a total package with more than solid grades in the classroom. He is one of three underclassmen that the Chiefs boast on the offensive line. Keep an eye on his progress.
