As we head toward Week 7 in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, you are starting to see the better teams move toward the top.
Very few changes in this week’s area Top 20 – with Plantation American Heritage, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely, Coconut Creek and Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian making moves that will go a long way in determining playoff positioning.
Over the next few weeks, huge matchups will further shake up the rankings, starting this week – as 10 Top 20 teams will clash.
As we head toward Week 7, here is a look at how programs are doing in this region:
1. Miami Central (2M – 5-0). THIS WEEK: The annual war against No. 11 Miami Northwestern on Oct. 7 at Traz Powell Stadium. NEXT GAME: No. 9 Miami Norland on Oct. 14. LAST WEEK: The Rockets remained unbeaten with a 41-0 district win over North Miami Beach.
9. Miami Norland (2M – 4-0). THIS WEEK: A huge Thursday night (Oct. 6) contest against No. 10 Miami Booker T. Washington. NEXT GAME: It’s an Oct. 14 game against No. 1 Miami Central. LAST WEEK: The Vikings were off.
10. Miami Booker T. Washington (2M – 5-1). THIS WEEK: An Oct. 6 showdown with No. 9 Miami Norland. NEXT GAME: Saturday, Oct. 15 showdown with No. 11 Miami Northwestern. LAST WEEK: The Tornadoes picked up a win this past week – beating Miami Jackson, 36-15.

While we continue to give you as many prospects as possible each and every week via our social media, we devote one day during the regular season to spotlight five football players who are making an impact.

2023 - Jordan Faison, QB/Athlete, 5-10, 170, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest. When you think about versatile football talent, here is someone who comes to mind quickly. This is the leader of a Panther team that has continued to impress, winning four of the first five games this season. His 940 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense, and his three interceptions on the defensive side of the ball only illustrates what this gifted young man brings to the table. In addition to what he does on the football field, his work in the classroom continues to open doors with a 4.3 GPA.

2023 – Kamari Frederick, DT, 6-0, 290, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely. Here is an impressive and dominating player that is perhaps one of the most overlooked and underpublicized student/athletes in south Florida. He controls everything up front with his quickness, strength and knowledge of the position. There are very few offensive linemen who can stop him – and that includes the top teams in the region. Has been one of the main reasons why the Tigers are unbeaten, heading into Week 7!

2023 – Jason Gabriel, WR, 5-11, 180, North Miami. Having watched this young man at camps, combines and 7-on-7 events during the off-season, you could see how things translate to the playing field. During the regular season, we were fortunate to see this young man perform, and while the Pioneers are a work in progress, this gifted prospect is among the best in the state of Florida. In addition to what he brings to the table on the offensive side of the ball, his work as a defensive back also showcases the talent and versatility. He is also a standout track athlete.

2024 – Jarvis Johnson, OLB, 6-1, 210, Miami Westminster Christian. On a team that is one of the big surprises this season, here is an underclassman who has already shown what he can do as one of the leading tacklers in the state. He has the ability to control the defensive side of the ball by making plays in the passing game, dropping into coverage as well as rushing the passer. Running on him is not easy at all. The fact that he has another year has the Warriors feeling pretty good.

2024 - Jonathan Morillo, QB, 6-1, 175, Pembroke Pines West Broward. From the spring here is a talented football player who showed signs of being an extremely impressive prospect, and it is all proving to be correct. His 1,022 yards and 8 touchdowns through the first half of 2022 has college coaches watching and teammates impressed. Good size, solid arm and the ability to make plays is why the attention is starting to fall in his direction.

When an article appeared last week that said Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, Miami Central and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas separated themselves from the rest of the teams in south Florida, Plantation American Heritage took exception to that statement.
While the Patriots had lost a thriller to Chaminade-Madonna, every player and coach felt that they belonged in that elite group that is south Florida.
On Saturday, first year head coach Mike Smith and his football team traveled to Fort Lauderdale to play Cardinal Gibbons, and by the end of the day, they dominated the key district contest, 21-2, moving to 5-1 and positioning themselves for a key seed when the playoffs begin in November.
Behind Ohio State commitments Brandon Inniss and Mark Fletcher Jr. on offense and senior linebacker David Vadala on defense, the Patriots took control in the second half and secured an afternoon game win.
For the two-time defending state champion Chiefs and head coach Matt Dubuc, it was their first loss of the season as they head back to finish the regular season and position themselves for a solid playoff spot.
In a week that saw some games shift around because of the threat that Hurricane Ian posed to the entire state of Florida, there will be a number of Monday games.

It is a rivalry that has been one sided through the years, but over the past five seasons, the matchup has been interesting and filled with plenty of excitement.
When No. 6 Plantation American Heritage (4-1) and No. 4 Cardinal Gibbons (5-0) kick it off today at noon at Cardinal Gibbons, a soldout crowd expects once again a tremendous matchup of two of the state’s top teams.
A game that had been moved a day because of Hurricane Ian, this contest is one where state championship pedigree will be on display as both are chasing a dream in the newly formed Class 3M.
The winner of this afternoon’s contest will certainly have an upped hand as the race for DRV PNK Stadium is on for head coach Mike Smith and his Patriots and head coach Matt Dubuc and the two-time defending state champion Chiefs.
Between the two teams, they have brought home five state titles in the past five seasons, and while the Patriots come in as a road favorite, this game has always featured the unexpected.

Battle of The Unbeatens: Fort Lauderdale & Blanche Ely Clash Tonight
At the start of the 2022 season if anyone told you that one of the big Week 6 matchups in south Florida would be Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach Blanche Ely, you may not have taken them too seriously.
But as Hurricane Ian has ravaged the state and altered several games in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, the No. 13 Flying Ls (4-0) and No. 16 Tigers (3-0) will clash this evening in a game that had certainly earned the spotlight.
For head coach Richard Dunbar and his Fort Lauderdale team, things have been moving along quite well over the past five seasons – as players and coaches have worked hard to make this season a reality.
Among some of the top seniors so far this season are Pat Boyd (WR), Jermarri Watson (WR), Ernest Joseph (RB), King Williams (LB/RB), Jalyn Jackson (Athlete), Monroe Allen (OLB/DE), John Alcime (DL), Athlete Za’mario Dunrod, T.J. Nelson (QB) and quarterback Luca Foerch.
The junior class has also been impressive - with receiver Keyveon Johnson, Remington Roberts (DB), Semaj McClain (OLB/DE), Elijah Bernard-Blue (CB) and safety/linebacker Celci Simons.
Sophomore running back Christian Bailey has also been impressive.

TIGERS RESTORING THE “ROAR”
When Mike Bailey took over as head coach of Blanche Ely, the one thing he promised was his team would play hard and take each game one at a time.
Despite having a few games postponed, he leads his Tigers into this evening’s game with plenty of optimism.
Among the top players so far this season in the senior class are impressive defensive secondary performer Harlem Howard, quarterback Nah’coy Daniels, outside linebacker Javin Farley, running back Cedric Ward, running back Ke’Shawn Jones, offensive lineman Roscoe Harris and defensive linemen Rackwon Pericles and Kamari Fredrick.
Juniors have also played a key role – with Marcel Williams (WR) and running back Edward McIntosh III.
