As you have already watched the past four weeks, this season is going to be filled with marquee matchups that every fan will want to check out.
This week the big game in south Florida will be on Saturday night at Traz Powell Stadium when the No. 1 team in Florida, Miami Central (3-0), plays host to the No. 7 team locally, Fort Lauderdale Dillard (2-1).
While there has been a lot of talk about this game – from both sides – there is not denying the fact that the Rockets come in a huge favorites to stay unbeaten under first year head coach Jube Joseph.
The Rockets are loaded on both sides of the ball and have already shown that they are indeed a team that is ready for its ninth state title and fourth in a row.
For the Panthers and head coach Tyler Tate, a loss to No. 2 Hollywood Chaminade Madonna hurt, and although they have bounced back from that game, a win on Saturday night can change the entire program that still has No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas left in the schedule. From an exposure standpoint, very few teams can say that they have played the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the state like Dillard will do by season’s end!

Here are a four more contests to check out:
No. 3 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (4-0) at Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast (1-3), South County Municipal Stadium, 7:00. The Raiders hit the road against one of the best 1-3 programs in Florida. One that has been more than tested and are very familiar with Miami-Dade and Broward competition, and while the Titans have high hopes, they have not played anyone remotely like St. Thomas Aquinas. This is solid road test for head coach Roger Harriott and his team, but depth and overall ability should separate these two teams quickly. Coach Irvin Jones and his team have beaten some quality opponents in the past.
No. 17 Miami Palmetto (1-3) at Vero Beach (4-0), Sebastian River High School, 7:00. Another Treasure Coast matchup for south Florida on the road. The Panthers had such high hopes of having a banner season, things have not started well with some crushing losses. Head Coach Mike Manasco and the Panthers know that their work will be cut out for them against the Indians and head coach Lenny Jankowski who have done very well against competition from the #305 and #954 throughout the years.
No. 18 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (2-0) at No. 16 Coconut Creek (2-2), 7:00. The saddest part about this quality matchup is nobody will get to see it. We are living in times where a few bad apples can ruin everything, and with threatening calls made about this game, the two teams and game officials will be the only ones allowed in for a contest that both programs had looked forward to. Head Coach Johnnie Sloan and the Cougars have lost two straight and look to get back on the winning track – while head coach Mike Bailey and his football team look to make it three straight and continue to turn heads.
Windermere Prep (4-0) at Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest (3-1), 7:00. It’s not often that the Panthers can jump into the spotlight, but after wins against Fort Lauderdale NSU University School (30-7), Fort Lauderdale Archbishop McCarthy (30-14) and Delray American Heritage (27-13), the Panthers get a Top 5 game this week at home against a quality team. The Lakers storm south with four quality wins under their belt, outscoring the opposition, 176-40. But head coach Timothy Hibbs and his team is ready to make a statement against a quality opponent.

As we have said over and over again, this year has already been special – with marquee matchup served up every week.
This week’s main course kicks off the 5th week of the 2022 season tonight – when No. 5 Miami Christopher Columbus (4-0) visits Miami Northwestern (3-1) at Traz Powell Stadium at 7:00.
For head coach Dave Dunn and his Explorers, this evening’s matchup is another chance to show that his team is among the elite ion the state. But the assignment is not that easy. They have not done well in the past with this program, but of course, that was a different time.
Head Coach Max Edwards and his Bulls truly need this win to put themselves back in the spotlight. They have played a crazy schedule – being dominated by No. 2 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna two weeks ago, 42-14.
This is indeed a game that is going to get plenty of attention – with media and recruiting fan websites flocking to the “Mecca” for this quality south Florida contest.

There is no hiding the fact that the first four weeks of the 2022 high school football season has been exciting and filled with some outstanding performances.
While many of the seniors are getting plenty of exposure so far – as colleges and universities look to fill their rosters with Class of 2023 talent, there have been some underclassmen who have found a way to steal the show.
Because of the outstanding youth leagues that we have in the south Florida area, it is not uncommon that a freshman or sophomore will enter school and compete at the varsity level right away. That has been going on for years – and that is a reason why colleges and universities are watching prospects as early as 14 and 15 years of age.
As we do throughout the course of the year, today we bring you five more talented young man to keep an eye on. Five prospects who are getting it done before their final season:
2025 – Jason “Weasel” Barket, QB, 6-0, 175, Miami Westminster Christian. With baseball lineage, here is a quality football player who has hit the high school varsity with plenty of talent and enthusiasm. From the same school that produced young stars such as Bill Henderson and David Thompson, this is a prospect with a strong and accurate arm and confidence way beyond his years. Whether it’s the short passing game or throwing long, he is someone college coaches need to start to watch for future reference. He also holds down a 3.5 GPA in the classroom.

2025 – Chris Ewald, CB, 6-1, 165, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. Playing on one of the nation’s best football teams, this is not a young man who blends in. Watch him play in any game and he turns heads. A three-year varsity player already, fans have had the chance to watch him play this game at a high level – and play it well. Will continue to emerge as one of the top talents in the state and country. He also gets it done in the classroom, where he holds down a 4.0 GPA.

2024 – Glenn Smith III, 5-10, 160, Miami Southridge. Transferring over from Somerset South Homestead this season, here is a gifted football talent who can do it all. Plenty of speed and athleticism, his ability to make plays has truly helped the Spartans already in this young season. Will continue to emerge as one of south Florida’s best over the next two seasons.

2025 – Deangelo Thompson Jr., DE, 6-3, 215, Miami Central. This is gifted talent who has already made an impact for the state’s No. 1 team. Since coming over from Miami Springs, his stock has started to rise as more analysts and recruiting specialists are getting the opportunity to watch his play at a high level and respond to every challenge. He is one of the many faces who will help the Rockets continue to dominate into the future.

2026 – Malachi Toney, WR, 5-10, 165, Plantation American Heritage. There may not be a freshman in the nation who has burst onto the scene against big time competition like this quality football player has. He has turned heads on national television as well as showcasing skills that many just do not have at this young age. As the season progresses, he will show that he is indeed ready to go up against anyone and get the job done. This is young man who plays this game at a very high level. Just remember the name – because you will definitely hear it for years and years to come!

We waited eight plus months for the start of the 2022, and when they kick things off this week across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties we will be close to the halfway point.
While early games may not have meant anything to some, the contest now being played could be the difference of playing into November and December or putting the gear away at the end of the regular season.
As you have already noticed, each and every week brings some new matchups that truly captured the attention of not only south Floridians, but have been the talk nationally as well.
As we head toward Week 5, here is a look at how programs are doing in this region:
1. Miami Central (2M – 3-0). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 7 Fort Lauderdale Dillard on Sept. 24. NEXT GAME: An away game on Sept. 30 against North Miami Beach. LAST WEEK: The Rockets only needed one half to beat Miami Carol City, 34-0.
2. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M – 4-0). THIS WEEK: Thursday, Sept. 22 at Miami Gulliver Prep at 3:30. NEXT GAME: A home game on Sept. 30 against Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast. LAST WEEK: The Lions stayed unbeaten with a thrilling home win against No. 6 Plantation American Heritage, 42-34.
3. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3M – 4-0). THIS WEEK: The team returns home for a Friday, Sept. 23 game against Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast. NEXT GAME: A home game against No. 14 Miramar on Sept. 30. LAST WEEK: The Raiders went on the road and took care of No. 10 Davie Western, 30-0.
4. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M – 4-0). THIS WEEK: A trip to Key West on Friday to play the Conchs on Sept. 23. NEXT GAME: It’s a huge home game on Sept. 30 against No. 6 Plantation American Heritage. LAST WEEK: The Chiefs got it going on both sides of the ball in a 34-6 win against St. Petersburg Northeast.
5. Miami Christopher Columbus (4M – 4-0). THIS WEEK: Another road game on Thursday, Sept. 22 at No. 8 Miami Northwestern. NEXT GAME: An away game on Friday, Sept. 30 against Miami High. LAST WEEK: The Explorers continued to turn heads as they beat No. 17 Miami Palmetto, 23-10.
6. Plantation American Heritage (2M – 4-1). THIS WEEK: They will take this week off after five straight games. NEXT GAME: A huge road game at No. 4 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons on Oct. 7. LAST WEEK: The Patriots lost for the first time this season in a thrilling game against No. 2 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, 42-34.

For the first time in 16 years, Chaminade-Madonna walked out of a game with Plantation American Heritage with a win.
Last Friday night, a capacity crown saw the Lions remain unbeaten with a thrilling victory over head coach Mike Smith and his Patriots, 42-34, keeping their national title hopes alive.
While the Lions turned the ball over several time and made numerous mistakes, the talent and depth prevailed in the end.
Every time head coach Dameon Jones and his team tried to pull away, the Patriots had an answer as the battle between Ohio State-bound senior running back Mark Fletcher Jr. and Chaminade-Madonna impressive junior Davion Gause stole the spotlight with both having a say in this epic classic.
Even though the Patriots lost the game, many expect them to rebound and make a solid run at the state title game. The Lions are aiming for a record seventh consecutive state finals appearance.
