The ‘Big Boys’ Are Out Tonight In South Florida

In Davie, the Western Wildcats will have their final tune up before the start of summer – as the Wildcats once again have plans to make a solid run at a state title in 2024.

With a date in the Broward County National Football Showcase in August against longtime Alabama power, head coach Adam Ratkevich and his team start the countdown with plenty of talent.

The annual instar-squad scrimmage will be held this evening on campus at 6:30.

In Fort Lauderdale, the five-time defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders end their spring with a 5 p.m. game.

This is a program that once again will be nationally-rated and will enter the Broward County National Showcase against defending national champion Las Vegas Bishop Gorman.

Head Coach Roger Harriott and his team have plenty of talent and will look toward and amazing sixth straight state title.

They have a very challenging schedule in 2024.

Also in Fort Lauderdale, the Coconut Creek Monarch Knights, who came within one quarter of getting to their first ever state football championship, will put an end to their very productive spring with a 6:30 contest at Fort Lauderdale.

Head Coach Calvin Davis and his team have reloaded and are more than ready for another run.

They will also take part in the Broward County National Football Showcase for the second straight year.

They will prepare to welcome Georgia power Peachtree Ridge.

One of the other programs who will take part in the Broward National Showcase will also be in action this evening when the Plantation American Heritage Patriots will play their annual instar-squad game on campus at 6 p.m.

This is a team, coached by Mike Smith, that lost in the state semifinals. Loaded with several weapons on both sides of the ball.

As they prepare for the opening games of the season against defending Georgia state champion, Milton, have some unfinished business to take care of this coming season.

The final team that will be in action tonight is Miami Central. No team has been so focused and motivated as the Rockets and head coach Jube Joseph, who missed the state finals for the first time in four years when they were beaten twice by Miami Norland.

The Rockets will blast off at 7 p.m. at Traz Powell Stadium in their annual spring instar-squad matchup – as they look to end the month with a solid performance with some new faces.

The Rockets will play Ocala Vanguard in the kickoff classic and get ready for defending state champions Lakeland to officially open the 2024 season.

Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Ends Spring Today

They finished unbeaten (14-0) a year ago, winning yet another state football title.

The national rankings had them at No. 2 – even though many felt that if they played anyone in the country they would come out on top.

Head Coach Dameon Jones and his Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Lions have become the standard for high school football programs nationally, outscoring the competition, 687-137, including an amazing 210-7 in the four state playoff games.

When the season ended, the Lions watched six players move on to elite Power “5” programs with several more attending other schools across the country.

This “factory” doesn’t rebuild – it simply reloads – as the off season proved.

While there is plenty of returning talent from last season, there are new faces as well – all will be on display this evening (5:00) for the annual spring game on campus.

Some of the top talent in south Florida made their move to Hollywood, joining some impressive returnees who are ready to head back to the state finals.

While Arwin Jackson (RB), Kyle Washington (WR), Jaquari Lewis (Athlete), Chris Ewald (DB), Kelly Sejour Jr. (DB), Bryant Junius (OLB), Craig Comrie Jr. (OLB), Ekeem Atehortua (OL), Donta Simpson Jr. (DT), and Anthony Smith (DT) return from last year, there several transfers who will also make this team one of the best in the country once again.

Final Week of Spring Highlights Some Tremendous Prospects

One of the best times to be a football fan in south Florida will come to an end this week.

Spring football. A time when prospects can make a statement in front of hundreds of college coaches has been taking center stage in the Sunshine State from the last week of April until this coming Friday.

From all over the country, colleges and universities come to watch practices, scrimmages and games that will give them an idea of what prospects to keep an eye on during the season ahead.

While very few states have the kind of full spring that Florida has, it helps to keep this state in the spotlight as every conference at every level sends colleges down to evaluate and watch future collegiate stars.

The process will continue next week as school starts to wind down and colleges across the country will open their doors for the month of June.

Camps and 7-on-7 events will bring talent from all over the nation to schools who roll out the red carpet for players and teams.

Locally, Miami, FIU, FAU and several of the NAIA programs host daily camps to attract future players to their campus.

For the entire month, student/athletes have these memorable experiences of bonding and meeting new friends.

This week – while many other areas of the state are finished with their spring – Miami-Dade and Broward Counties will have their time in the spotlight with several games and intra-squad scrimmages that attract fans, colleges and gives the parents to see how much progress their sons have made over the past month.

Carol City Is On The Way Back

If you have followed south Florida football for any length of time, you already know that when Miami Carol City’s football program is doing well, it is great for football in the Sunshine State.

This program has long been one of the schools that produces talent, wins state titles and is often in the playoff mix. That has not been the case over the past few years – and as things begin to turn around, the alumni and those who follow the Chiefs closely are indeed pleased by the way this off-season has taken place.

When George Stubbs Sr. was hired, this program received a quick infusion of respect, knowledge, and the understanding that they hired someone who knows the game and has been around programs that have been through the building process.

What has happened since Stubbs and his staff came aboard is impressive. Several established football prospects have joined the program and have elevated this team as they head toward their intra-squad spring game this Thursday night (7:30) at Lester Brown Park (19405 NW 32nd Ave, Miami Gardens, FL 33056).

If the ball is to start rolling at this school, it will be the rising senior (2025) class that will need to step up.

Among those talented prospects include Davon Baker (LB, 6-0, 195), Derrick Bromell (DB, 5-10, 160), Qualon Barr (OL, 6-1, 315), Davion Figaro (DB, 5-11, 170), Shamar Fowles (WR, 6-1, 180), Jaylin Jackson (WR, 6-0, 162), Lawrence Johnson (LB, 5-11, 210), Mitchmael Joseph (WR, 6-1, 170), Randy Phillips III (QB, 6-6, 185), Jamal Rowell (DL, 6-0, 290), and standout edge rusher Brandon Thomas (6-6, 210).

THE FUTURE WILL BE IN THE HANDS OF TALENTED UNDERCLASSMEN

No matter what happens this coming season, the future of Carol City will fall with the prospects who are in the 2026, 2027 and incoming 2028 classes.

Here is a look at some of those gifted prospects:

CLASS OF 2026

There is a lot of talent in this rising junior group – such as Shmar Akande (DB, 6-2, 170), Jonathan Brooks (DL, 6-4, 245), University of Miami commitment Jordan Campbell (Athlete, 6-2, 203), Daishaun Dorsett (LB, 6-3, 195), Milka Drummonds (OL, 6-4, 260), Alexander Gayle (OL, 5-11, 285), Thomas Jones (DB, 5-11, 165), Justin Rowell (LB, 5-10, 185), and defensive lineman Dennairio Williams (6-0, 220).

CLASS OF 2027

Keep an eye on this gifted class with prospects such as Santana Blount (WR, 5-8, 140), Jashon Chaneton (DB, 6-0, 162), Antwon Coleman Jr. (DL, 6-1, 300), Tavius Higgs (DL, 6-5, 260), and linebacker Keith Logan (5-11, 175).
