Recruiting News

Road To Tallahassee Continues Today In South Florida

A year ago, Homestead South Dade’s football program finished 2-7, were outscored 261-201 and failed to make the state playoffs.

The Bucs, who routinely found themselves in the playoff mix each season, had sunk to the bottom – and that didn’t go over well with fans, players, and longtime supporters.

Enter Chris Reid. Someone who knew this program, the community and what it took to get back to where this proud program has been for decades.

From the very beginning, Reid made it clear that South Dade would once again have that football team that everyone could be proud of.

Tonight, the turnaround continues when the 7-3 Bucs travel to Broward County to play district champion West Broward at Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines.

The contest will not only spotlight Reid and his team, but also the Bobcats and head coach Brian McCartney, who have now established this team as one to watch each season.

After losing to Miami Palmetto in the first round of the state playoffs a year ago, this is a team that went right after it during the off-season.

Coach McCartney took this team to colleges and universities all over to give them competition and exposure. It has paid off. After losing the first two games of the season, they reeled off a 7-1 record, losing only to state-rated Daytona Beach Mainland on the road.

This Region 4-4M quarterfinal game will produce a winner that will move on next week to play No. 1 Miami Columbus (9-2) in the regional semifinal.

Road To Tallahassee Starts Tonight

It is perhaps the most exciting five weeks on the high school football calendar, and it all begins tonight.

The state championship series starts across Florida – and Miami-Dade and Broward Counties will have an opportunity to grab the early spotlight.

With Veteran’s Day being observed by both counties on Friday, the action will begin with nine games as dreams will have the chance to come true.

PATRIOT BOWL 2 HIGHLIGHTS THE OPENING ROUND

When Miramar and Hialeah American got together back on Oct. 13, the game was very important in the district. While Miramar won 27-8, American felt that they had their chances.

Tonight, the “Patriot Bowl” comes to Miramar for the second meeting of the season, but this contest is super important as the state championship series will kick things off – with the destination being Florida A&M in Tallahassee in the second week of the season.

For American, this has been an up and down season as they come into tonight’s game at 6-4.

Head Coach Tim Neal and his team lost a key season-ending contest to North Miami Beach in overtime. The Patriots have been a streaky team and understands that anything but their best effort will not be enough to be a very impressive program.

They have won four of the past five games, including outscoring their final two opponents (Miramar Everglades and Hollywood South Broward), 94-24.

Area Quarterbacks Look To Make Playoff Impact

Over the next five weeks, there will be several talented football players in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties who will step up and make an impact on their teams.

These talented young men have been responsible for getting their programs into the playoffs and have been noticed by fellow players, coaches, and colleges.

While the senior class (2024) has been on the clock this season, they are not the only ones who have driven teams to the post season.

Here are some impressive quarterbacks to keep an eye on in Round 1:

There is no getting around that the quarterback position continues to elevate every year in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

There are several reasons who the position is being thrust into the national spotlight – and while playing year-round is huge, it’s those special instruction that they are receiving that has put many on a different level.

We are just one day away from the start of the post season, and prospects such as Kael Alexander, Miramar (2,039 passing yards, 23 TDs), Cedrick Bailey, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1,845 passing yards, 27 TDs), Jason Barket, Miami Westminster Christian (1,810 passing yards, 11 TDs), Davi Belfort, Davie Western (1,669 yards, 16 TDs), Travis Delaney, Hialeah (1,97 passing yards, 19 TDs), Devin Gonzalez, Weston Cypress Bay (1,679 passing yards, 23 TDs) and Coconut Creek’s James Hayes (1,337 passing yards, 12 TDs) are ready to perform.

Also keep an eye on big time prospects such as Andrew Indorf, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (1551 passing yards, 20 TDs), Zac Katz, Miami True North Classical Academy (2,188 passing yards, 27 Tds), Alberto Mendoza, Miami Christopher Columbus (1,508 passing yards, 17 TDs), Michael Merdinger, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2,035 passing yards, 21 TDs), and Jonathan Morillo, Pembroke Pines West Broward (1,850 passing yards, 19 TDs).

When you are talking big numbers, South Broward junior Randy Phillips, Hollywood South Broward (2,822 passing yards, 15 TDs) and Miami Norland nationally rated junior Ennio Yapoor, Miami Norland) (2,483 passing yards, 18 TDs) have been in a class by themselves for the Bulldogs and Vikings. So have J.T. Tabora, Plantation (1,856 passing yards, 20 TDs), Rueben Toombs, Fort Lauderdale Stranahan (1,326 passing yards, 20 TDs) and Joshua Townsend, Homestead (1,319 passing yards, 16 TDs).

SEE THEM FOR YOURSELF

While stats are nice, production and mechanics will go a long way in the recruitment of a quarterback.

Revenge Was Sweet For Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy

When Ehren Wallhoff’s team left the field at NSU University School back on Oct. 12, he and his team had a terrible feeling.

What had transpired was Fort Lauderdale Westminster dropped an embarrassing 42-7 decision, and never got in the flow of the regular season matchup. It was their first loss of the year.

With the Sunshine State Athletic Association playoffs coming up, the Lions knew that they would have to return to the scene of their only loss – and this one would watch the stakes rise in a major way.

Last Thursday night – with a trip to Lakeland on the line, Westminster Academy approached the second meeting of the year in a business manner, and from the beginning, there was no doubt that this was not the same team that was completely overmatched.

From running to passing, kicking, blocking and every other facet of the game, the Lions (9-1) took care of business and came home with a convincing 41-20 win, handing the Sharks their first loss of the season.

That victory sends this team to the title game of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference title game on Saturday night at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland against 8-2 Oviedo Master’s Academy.

The win was indeed a team effort as senior QB Anthony Barbar led the way with 5 touchdowns. He was 7 of 10 for 181 yards and 4 passing touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.

In addition, highly regarded junior WR D.J. Wimbley had 6 catches for 124 yards and 3 TDs. He also added 4 tackles on defense.

The Lions received a boost from senior RB/LB Alonso Collins, who rushed the ball 30 times for 139 yards and a touchdown. He also had a punt return for 31 yards that led to a key Lions touchdown. He also added 5 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.

Like he has done all season, senior LB Evan Tempro led the defense with 11 tackles, 1 TFL and a PBU.

In addition to that game, the final week of the regular season stacked up like this:
