Since last December, there have been all-star games, camps, combines and 7-on-7 events – all designed to get ready for the 2022 high school football season.
When Fort Lauderdale Stranahan and Life Christian of Virginia kick it off in the Inaugural Broward County Football Showcase at 4:30 today at Western High Stadium in Davie, that long off-season will come to an end.
The game, which is one of seven contests that will be played over a three-day period at Western, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, Dillard and St. Thomas Aquinas, will indeed usher in a new season – as Miami-Dade and Broward Counties schools will join the rest of the state today, Friday and Saturday for the first week of a new season.
Life Christian Academy, Virginia at No. 16 Fort Lauderdale Stranahan (Western High), 4:00. The Dragons are coming off an 8-5 season that included two state playoff games.
Head Coach Travis Harden and his football team are hoping to get off on the right foot in this showcase classic.
For head coach Charlie Scott and his Eagles, opening the season last week against Collins Hill is just part of the growing process.
This is a team that has as challenging a schedule as you will find, and while the players are young, this is indeed a program that will continue to find out about each and every player as the season moves along. They were 4-6 a year ago.
John’s Creek, Georgia at No. 8 Davie Western, 7:30. The nightcap on Day 1 will feature a rebuilding Georgia program under the direction of first year head coach Drew Connell against a Wildcat team that has been building for this season the past four years.
The Gladiators come to town after an opening setback to power Parkview after winning 24 times the past three seasons.
They are young, but are well coached an have playmakers.
Speaking of playmakers, Western has more than their share – with a senior quarterback that is easily one of the best in Florida – and most productive in Broward County.
Coached by Adam Ratkevich, the sites have been set on playing for a 4M state title this season, and they have the talent to do it.
Both games will be part of five games to be telecast on FLO Sports.

There are very few recruiting sites across the country that has an opportunity to watch as many prospects as we do.
Getting out and seeing these young men from five feet away and watching everything from talent to character is something that makes all the difference in the world.
If you understand the recruiting process, you know that watching film is a small part of evaluating athletes, but some who want to be an authority or part of this lengthy process continue to watch film and never see these prospects in person.
Talk to colleges and coaches will tell you that they can watch film and evaluate any time. They have the same access to the talent as you and I do. But the one thing that they cannot see from film is perhaps one of the most important parts of recruiting. You cannot tell character from watching a film clip. There is no way that you can honestly say that while the athlete may be quick and talented, there could be a major character flaw, and whether those who want to play a role in the recruiting process admit it or not, that could be the difference of how successful the athlete will be.
Throughout the year, we bring Miami-Dade and Broward players and teams right to the coaches and fans. The back stories on prospects and intangibles will go further than how many tackles they make or touchdowns they score.
Today, once again, we bring you five prospects to keep an eye on as the season is now getting started. It’s something we did in the offs-season and will continue to do right through this season.
2025 – King Davis, RB, 5-10, 165, Miami Northwestern. From the first time we watched this quality talent perform, there was no question that he was going to be one of the best in the nation for his class. Fast, strong, instinctive, mature and knew what it took to have success at the high school level. From watching his older brother, this is a gifted football player who is indeed a huge part of the future for this program as the continue to reload.
TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/16147654/King-Davis
2023 - Kamari Frederick, DL, 5-11, 290, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely. Making his way over from Deerfield Beach, there is no getting around the fact that this was one of the premier prospects in his class two years ago, and he remains at that level today. Strong, athletic and has everything it takes to be a solid nose tackle – down to the fact that he is smaller for a defensive lineman but does not lack leverage and skill to dominate for the Tigers this coming season. Another of those flying under-the-radar talents who has a chance to be very special.
TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/14687589/Kamari-Federick
2024 - Alejandro Isaza, RB, 5-9, 170, Miami Archbishop Carroll. At a school that is truly hidden from the spotlight, here is a versatile football talent that represents the future of this program. With head coach Jorge Zagales and his staff, you can already see how they have brought out some quality skills that this young man has. He is only going to get better, and with the season upon us, this is a name that you will hear about on both sides of the ball. He is that talented!

@dreamchaserale @in_huddle @SFHSSports @PrepRedzoneFL @VSNflorida
2023 - TeKai Kirby, TE, 6-4, 220, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. There are very few football players in the state who have transformed themselves over a period of 12 months like this quality young man has. The son of former University of Virginia and NFL standout running back Terry Kirby, his body has developed into someone who will put on more weight in the next few years. He has the size, skill level and a work ethic that very few have. Also headed to attend Virginia, this is definitely a student/athlete to watch in 2022 and beyond. If he continues to progress each year, it could get scary.
TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/13307887/TeKai-Kirby
2023 – Walter Parrish, WR, 6-3, 190, Coconut Creek Monarch. Yet another football talent who had an amazing off-season, in the spring, at camps, combines and at 7-on-7 events. As many receivers in the region continued to get the spotlight shining in their direction, this is one who has remained consistent and has worked hard to elevate his game. The Knights have surrounded him with plenty of skill that will only help and enhance his game.

Four finalists for the CBS4 Nat Moore Trophy will be announced in November, and the public will be encouraged to vote online at NatMooreTrophy.com.
The CBS4 Nat Moore Trophy, which features a cast-bronze image of Moore, will be presented on Tuesday, December 13th. The ceremony will be televised on CBS4 on Wednesday, December 14th.
More information and complete contest rules are available at NatMooreTrophy.com.
About The CBS4 Nat Moore Trophy
The CBS4 Nat Moore Trophy was created by CBS4 to recognize the top high school football player in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Monroe County. The trophy honors the local football legacy of Pro Bowl wide receiver Nat Moore, a native Floridian who was a Miami Edison Senior High Red Raider before going on to become a star running back at the University of Florida. He was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1978.
Moore was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1974. Over his 13-year playing career, he recorded 510 receptions for 7546 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns. He ranks in the top three players in Dolphins history in each of those statistics.
In 1984, the NFL voted Moore as “Man of the Year” for outstanding service to his community and he received the Byron White Humanitarian Award in 1986. His post-retirement career is filled with humanitarian work and philanthropy. In 1998, he created the Nat Moore Foundation, which works with disadvantaged kids in Miami-Dade County in efforts to make sure they receive the best education possible. He is currently the Dolphins’ Senior Vice President of Special Projects and Alumni Relations.
The CBS4 Nat Moore Trophy is presented by FPL.
When many local programs played this past week, it was just a preview of what lies ahead in 2022.
For many football teams, the rugged off-season prepared them for just about anything, and as football fans found out this past week, this coming season will be mighty interesting.
The great thing about this year is that every week you will have marquee matchups. Whether they are neighborhood rivalries or contests against programs outside of the area, look for this region to put their best foot forward.
This past week, one team got things going for real – when first year head coach Mike Smith brought his No. 6 Plantation American Heritage Patriots up to Georgia for a meeting with Lowndes County, and this team responded with a convincing 38-20 win as they prepare for the Broward County Elite Showcase this Saturday afternoon against Los Alamitos, California at St. Thomas Aquinas.

When Fort Lauderdale Stranahan and Life Christian of Chester, Virginia kick the 2022 football season off on Thursday at 4:30 at Western High in Davie, it will begin three days and 14 teams that will shine a rather large spotlight on Broward County.
The Inaugural National High School Football Showcase, which Hollywood Hills Athletic Director Dr. Kevin Perry, and Shawn Cerra, Director, Athletics & Student Activities for Broward County Public Schools, have worked around the clock on, is a HUGE deal and the hours and years of planning has already paid off.
This event and idea were born years ago in Michigan when Dr. Perry brought together the best teams in the state for an east vs. west matchup at the famed “Big House” in Ann Arbor.
When Dr. Perry came to south Florida, his idea was to try it in an area that is indeed the true national hotbed for talent.
With an idea toward inviting Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach schools to be included in this event, the starting point was bringing seven Broward schools together against some national teams that were ready for the challenge.
“We knew that if we got the support and businesses to sponsor this, it was a no brainer,” Dr. Perry pointed out. “Shawn and I have been at this for well over a year, and things have really fallen into place.”
BOWL GAME ATMOSPHERE
What this event is going to be is like a bowl game. All 14 schools who are taking part will visit Dave & Busters in Hollywood and have unlimited food and games. They will also stay in amazing hotels, have transportation and meals provided – and like all bowl games – will receive gear to commemorate this impressive three days.
“You couldn’t ask for a better way to start the season,” Cerra pointed out. “We hadn’t even kicked a game off and there are also a number of national powers wanting to be a part of this in 2023.”
While several schools in south Florida were approached, many declined for a number of reasons, which is a huge mistake on their part.
The seven games that will be played will have national exposure – including on ESPN and ESPN 2 as well as on Flo Sports.
