Westland Hialeah Still Making Some Noise

THE WILDCATS FILE

Head Coach: Joe Gross

2021 Record: 8-2

THE SCOOP

From the beginning, this was never a program that put the fear into its opponents. But times have changed.

With tremendous coaching, solid prospects and a year-round commitment to getting better, this school, once known for the baseball program, is now something of an attraction in the fall as well.

What has happened is the talent on hand believes in the direction and are all willing to make the sacrifices needed to win football games – like they showed a year ago.

While nobody will mistake the Wildcats for a Northwestern of Central, the respect that they have gotten is well deserved and something that many hope will continue.

Here is a look at the prospects who are ready to make a contribution:

Miramar Everglades Believes It Has A Bright Future

THE GATORS FILE

Head Coach: Rodney Rumph

2021 Record: 0-9

THE SCOOP

When the 2021 season came to an end, and the Gators failed to win a game, the focus was immediately on the future.

Enough was enough and this program was tired of being on the bottom, so things started to change. New coaches were brought on and an emphasis of being a year-round program with a purpose came into focus.

While a number of seniors return for 2022, the emphasis was put squarely on the younger prospects.

Loaded up with Class of 2024 juniors, Class of 2025 sophomores and incoming freshmen, this is a program that is certainly headed in the other direction, and that is something that started to surface in the spring.

While this team knows that the rebuild will not come overnight, there is a feeling that has not be in place for a number of years.

Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy Building For The Future

THE LIONS FILE

Head Coach: Ehren Walhoff

2021 Record: 7-4

THE SCOOP

With a playoff appearance in hand, this is a program that approaches the 2022 season with plenty of optimism – realizing that hard work and year-round dedication can add up to some positives.

Instead of playing on the four losses, the Lions need to pay more attention to the wins from this past season.

Victories over Boca Raton St. John Paul II (33-20), Hollywood Surge Academy (41-6), Boynton Beach Somerset Canyons (28-14), Homestead Everglades Prep (42-0), Coconut Creek North Broward Prep (33-14), Homestead Somerset Academy South (27-0) and Miami Palmer Trinity (57-18) gave many of the underclassmen a belief that they can win games and improve from year to year.

Miami Gulliver Prep Looks Toward The Future

THE RAIDERS FILE

Head Coach: Earl Sims

2021 Record: 11-2

THE SCOOP

They had built it for a strong run in 2021 – with talent on both sides of the ball and thought by many who follow high school football as the best 4A team in Florida.

With everything going in their favor, the Raiders jumped out to big lead against the defending state champion Chiefs of Cardinal Gibbons, only to see the dream fall apart, losing a thrilling, but very disappointing 36-33 decision to the eventual state champions.

The season was set up with wins – including victories against Bradenton Manatee (20-7), Miami Killian (37-10), Miami Monsignor Pace (51-7), Miami Gardens Tru Prep (39-38), North Palm Beach Benjamin (49-14), Miami Dade Christian (43-0), defending 2A state champion Hialeah Champagnat Catholic (52-27), West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (49-13) and Orlando Bishop Moore (38-7), and a first-round state playoff win against Miami Booker T. Washington (43-0).

For the second straight year, the Raiders would lose to Cardinal Gibbons, dashing any hope of bringing home a state title.

With many of those experienced faces moving on, this team had an outstanding spring – which included a win over Key West, setting the tone for the summer.
